Google admits its TV experience is slow, rolls out improvements

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) Google has admitted that its TV software is slow for users and after hearing their feedback, the company is rolling out some major updates to improve performance and manage storage on both Chromecast with Google TV and other smart TVs.

The company said that via CPU optimisations and improvements to cache management, "we've reduced the time it takes for the Google TV home screen to load at startup so you can start browsing shows and movies faster."

These updates will be available on all devices over time, said Google which launched TV almost two years ago.

The company said it has also improved navigation so scrolling within a tab and switching between tabs is more responsive.

"The Live tab also loads quicker, so you'll see less of the loading animation when switching between tabs. Google TV now uses less RAM," said the tech giant.

Google also made image caching optimisations that will reduce the time it takes to switch to kids profiles and to start browsing through content.

"We've eliminated the latency between loading a kids profile to starting an app," it informed late on Monday.

There are currently 10,000 apps available on Google TV.

A "Free up storage" menu in the Settings will now allow users to easily clear cache and uninstall apps that they are not using, thus maximising device's storage space.

This feature has already rolled out to Chromecast with Google TV and is in an upcoming system update for smart TVs with Google TV.

"We've also made some under-the-hood changes to how Google TV handles app installations so that fewer users see storage-related errors when trying to install a new app," said Google.

PS5 unboxing videos show how huge the console is

To say that Sony has been a bit coy when it comes to the PlayStation 5 would be a bit of an understatement. The company only recently announced the India pricing of the console and now finally we have unboxings of the console going live and one thing is pretty clear - The console is HUGE!  So what do you get in the box? Well… besides the console itself (and the manuals), you get: DualSense controller USB Type-C charging cable for the controller HDMI 2.1 cable Power cable for the console (no bulky adapter/box) Plastic stand Now the plastic stand is used if you place the console on its side. As there is no flat surface on either side of the console, the stand will ensure that it remains still. But you can also place it when propping up the console vertically. However, it does seem like the PS5 can stand on its own vertically if need be. IGN’s unboxing video gives you a good idea of how to place the stand. All of the unboxing videos mention the size of the console because it is pr...
