HDMI 21a standard to launch at CES 2022, what you need to know about the new HDMI standard

The HDMI Forum, in charge of standardising HDMI standards, will show off HDMI 2.1a at CES 2022. The new standard brings Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM). According to The Verge, “SBTM is a new HDR feature that offloads some of the HDR tone mapping to the content source (like your computer or set-top box) alongside the tone mapping that your TV or monitor is doing.” What is HDMI 2.1a and Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) HDMI 2.1a is the new standard announced by the HDMI Forum. The unique thing about this new HDMI standard is the Source-based Tone Mapping. For example, if you have a Blu-ray player or a laptop connected to the TV, and you are consuming HDR content, the tone mapping can be handled by the player instead of the TV.  This ability of the player to handle the tone mapping in place of the TV isn't something new and we have...

New Covid-19 breathalyser test can detect the virus much quicker than a nasal swab

As the world continues to grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers at Brown University have now developed a test that could help easily detect Covid-19. The test is a sort of breathalyzer called the Bubbler. Patients have to blow into a tube for about 15 seconds, after which a combination of enzymes then reverse transcribes the RNA into DNA, making it much easier for healthcare workers to detect an infection. The test essentially measures the viral particles through a patient's breath without the need for an invasive nasal swab. In fact, we earlier reported that Researchers have developed a chewing gum that could possibly prevent Covid-19. You can read more about that here.  We’ve all gone through a nasal swab and know how uncomfortable it can be, so something like this could make detection easier and less traumatic. Measuring the particles in a patient’s breath could also be more meaningful as Covid-19 is generally transmitted through an airborne method. Testing a pa...

The existential threat of universal loneliness looms large over the collective psyche of mankind. This is why the launch of the James Webb telescope could be a boon for astrophysics and humanity, in general. Xbox Game Pass added games worth more than Rs 4,70,000 in 2021

Let's face it, gaming is an expensive hobby. Not only do you need to spend Rs 50,000 (if you can find it at retail) for the PS5 (review) or Xbox Series X (review), but each new AAA game at launch costs roughly Rs 4000 to Rs 6000 which is quite a lot. While most gamers will wait for a sale or price drop to get their hands on their favourite game, the urge to play a new game at launch is quite palpable especially if it has been reviewed really well. This is where a service like Game Pass from Microsoft really helps soften the blow and reduces the point of entry to enjoy a great catalogue of games. Xbox Game Pass starts at Rs 489 per month for the consoles or PC and the combination of the two along with access to Games with Gold and EA Play is priced at Rs 699. This is of course, before tax. As of writing this story, new members get access to 8 months of service for the price of one which is incredible value getting you addicted to the service immediately. You can learn more about th...
